Austin Vendor With Ties to City Official Wins $4.8M IT Contract — Competitors Say Process Was Rigged

A technology services company with direct ties to a sitting Austin city council member’s former staff has been awarded a $4.8 million contract to manage network infrastructure for two city departments, documents obtained by Corruption Watch – TX reveal.

The contract, awarded in October 2025 by the Austin Department of Technology and Innovation, went to Vantage Meridian Group — a firm founded in 2022 by a former senior aide who left the council member’s office eight months before the company was incorporated. Procurement records show Vantage Meridian was the only bidder rated “highly qualified” in the evaluation process, despite submitting a proposal that was, by total cost, the second-highest among five finalists.

Three competing vendors, speaking on background, said the request for proposals contained technical specifications that appeared tailored to Vantage Meridian’s specific service offerings. “The language in Section 4 of the RFP was so narrow that we had to ask our legal team whether it was even worth responding,” one vendor representative told us.

City procurement rules require a firewall between officials and vendors employing their former staff within two years of separation. The timeline of the council aide’s departure and the company’s founding sits at the edge of that window.

The council member’s office did not respond to a detailed list of questions submitted on June 10. The city’s Office of the City Auditor confirmed it is “aware of the contract” but declined to comment on whether a review is underway.

Vantage Meridian’s principal, reached by phone, said the company “competed fairly under every applicable rule” and declined further comment.
